Beyond the Surface
Why Material Education Matters More Than Ever
back to editorial back to editorial

As architecture and interior design continue to evolve, so do the materials shaping the spaces around us. Today, specification is about far more than aesthetics—it’s about performance, sustainability, wellness, and creating smarter, healthier environments for the future. As the expectations placed on materials continue to rise, so does the importance of understanding them at a deeper level.

That was the focus of Anatolia and Aeterna’s first Continuing Education Unit (CEU) experience, hosted over three days at our Canadian Head Office in Vaughan, Ontario. Titled Beyond the Surface: Mastering Sintered Slabs, Porcelain & Stone for Smarter, Healthier Design, the event brought together architects and designers for an immersive educational experience centered on the evolving role of surface materials in modern design.

3 Days. Endless Inspiration.

Across three sessions, attendees explored the technical and practical realities of working with sintered slabs, porcelain, and natural stone. From understanding manufacturing technologies and installation methods to examining accessibility, wellness, and sustainability, the CEU provided a comprehensive look at how material choices directly impact the spaces we create.

As surface technology advances, understanding how materials are made has become just as important as understanding how they look. Sintered surfaces, in particular, continue to transform the industry with their durability, low porosity, and versatility across both residential and commercial applications. But innovation alone isn’t enough—designers need the knowledge to specify with confidence and clarity.

Beyond the Surface. Beyond Expectations.

A major theme throughout the CEU was the growing responsibility designers carry when selecting materials. Today’s conversations go beyond style and finish, extending into questions of long-term performance, environmental impact, hygiene, and user wellness. These considerations are no longer secondary; they are central to creating spaces that perform better and serve people more thoughtfully.

Beyond the educational sessions, the event created space for meaningful connection and collaboration. Architects and designers had the opportunity to exchange ideas, discuss industry trends, and engage in conversations about the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of design. Combined with a welcoming atmosphere and shared hospitality, the experience felt as much about community as it did education.

Where Material Knowledge Meets Design Innovation.

For those who participated in the optional warehouse tour, the experience extended beyond the classroom. Walking through Anatolia’s sintered slab facility offered a firsthand understanding of scale, craftsmanship, and the logistics behind bringing these materials to market—bridging the gap between design vision and manufacturing reality.

For Anatolia and Aeterna, this CEU experience marks the beginning of a larger commitment to education, innovation, and industry collaboration. As materials continue to evolve, so will the conversations around how they are designed, manufactured, and specified.

Because the future of design isn’t just about choosing the right material—it’s about understanding it.

Smarter Materials. Stronger Design.
